Toffees Squad Members Give Applause to Gueye Following Apology for Keane Incident
The Everton midfielder received a round of applause from his Everton teammates after issuing an apology for his shocking dismissal during the recent triumph at Manchester United.
Unprecedented Incident in Premier League
Gueye earned the distinction of being the first Premier League player to be sent off for striking a fellow player in 17 years when he slapped Michael Keane during the fixture. The Toffees' performance was remarkable as they played with a man down for the majority of the game, including added time, to achieve David Moyes' first win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in 18 attempts.
'I want to apologise first to Michael Keane,' Gueye stated on his accounts. 'I take full responsibility for my reaction.'
Dressing Room Reaction
Gueye was unable to secure an opportunity to speak with Moyes or his teammates at half-time. Afterwards, with the away dressing room buzzing after the 1-0 win, the veteran requested to speak to the whole team and Keane in particular.
- He expressed regret to Keane for striking him across the face
- The heated early altercation occurred after a misplaced pass in his own penalty area
- Additionally he said sorry to the team for putting them with a difficult challenge
- Gueye's words were positively accepted by the players
Potential Consequences
Gueye could still be disciplined by Everton despite the manager's admission that he likes his players competing with each other. Moyes has a regular punishment process for dismissals and cautions, including fines, which is likely to be implemented in Gueye's case.
Ban and International Commitments
The Merseyside club may find themselves without their influential player until the January. The Senegalese international will complete a three-game ban against Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest but could be called up for Africa Cup of Nations duty by his national team before he can return to play against the Blues on mid-December.
'Passions can sometimes overflow,' Gueye continued. 'However, there's no excuse for such conduct.'
Opposition Reaction
Meanwhile, the Manchester United defender accused United of lacking urgency in Monday's loss, which halted their winning streak at multiple matches.
- 'English football doesn't tolerate weakness,' said the Dutch defender
- 'We lacked that urgency to score goals,'
- 'Against a team like Everton,' that defend deep it's difficult
United travel to Selhurst Park for Sunday's lunchtime start. 'The next game is really important now,' commented De Ligt. 'We have to bounce back from this performance.'
