Three Lions Coach Shares The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he's dedicated supporting Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from the pitch to the sidelines began with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a standing through unique exercises and great man-management. His roles at clubs included elite sides, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including top footballers. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both test boundaries. Their strategies include player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. He stresses the England collective and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach ought to embody all the positives of English football,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – building from the defense, attacking high up. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are really trying to speed up play in that central area.”

Drive for Growth

His desire for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into the most challenging environments imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Frank was one of those won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
