Pedro Neto Fires Treble as Chelsea Provide Liam The Boss with Joyous Homecoming to Hull
Against a backdrop of sleet, snow, and a biting wind from the banks of the Humber Estuary, combined with a resolute Hull City side pushing hard for promotion, this presented all the makings of a difficult evening’s task for the visitors.
"We could have added to our tally but the opposition are a good team and it was a difficult tie; I am very pleased with the performance," the manager stated. "Hull City is very special to me so it was nice to get a positive welcome from the fans of supporters. The attitude of the lads was excellent."
Liam Rosenior has this city dear to him, given part of his family hail from Hull and his successful period in charge of the Tigers. This positive connection was extended with a magnificent performance from his squad, who ultimately strolled into the next round of the famous old competition.
Clinical Edge Seals Comprehensive Win
Seventy-two hours removed from surrendering a two-goal lead in the Premier League, there was a hint of vulnerability about them going into this intriguing tie. The packed home support clearly sensed it too, but Rosenior's men navigated the task perfectly.
Rosenior rang the changes, making multiple of them to his XI. The tie could and maybe should have been decided long before it eventually was, with two Estêvão Willian and the forward guilty of missing excellent chances to put Chelsea ahead in the opening period.
However, fortunately for the away team, Pedro Neto was in a far more clinical mood. He broke the deadlock with a marvellous long-range strike, which proved to be the spark for his team to assume control of the match. By the final whistle, they had four, with the forward scoring a trio of them for a superb hat-trick.
The Forward's Response and Influence
The home side showed great fight throughout, but the better chances consistently came to the visitors. The winger should have broken the deadlock when he went past goalkeeper Dillon Phillips before unbelievably firing over. The striker then had a similar horror incident in front of goal against his former club.
He deflected a Phillips's kick which bounced off the bar, and he began to run away thinking the ball had crossed the line. It hadn’t, and by the time he realised, Hull's defenders had responded to clear the threat.
The player had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was hugely influential from that point onward, registering three key passes. The opening was for the first goal as his through ball set up Neto to score from range. Shortly after the second half began, it was 2-0 as the forward's corner went directly in through the keeper's legs.
Contest Put Beyond Doubt and Focus Shifts
Soon after Neto’s second goal, the match was put beyond doubt as a dazzling dribble from the forward teed up his teammate to slide into an unguarded goal. The hat-trick hero then completed his hat-trick as Delap again played the crucial pass for the attacker to calmly slot past a stranded goalkeeper.
By that stage, the work Hull had put in in the opening half-hour had been forgotten. Their focus must now return to securing a promotion to the Premier League under Sergej Jakirovic, who left out a number of key players with that aim in mind.
"I think we deserved at least one goal but if we play like this we will be in a strong position in the league," the Hull manager commented. "Never surrender, maybe in the next matches this can be a positive lesson of how we should play."
There was great endeavour to the end, and they almost claimed a late goal when a substitute struck a the upright in stoppage time. But this was the Blues' evening, and another positive step forward for their recently-appointed head coach at a place he is familiar with very well.
Cup Omens Look Good
That made for an in the end straightforward evening’s performance, and the cup competition signs are positive from here for Chelsea. They have faced Hull on three previous occasions in this competition in the last decade and on each occasion, they have progressed to make the final. There is remains to be done in that respect, but this was another huge positive for the Chelsea boss.
