At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Police Raid on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians were killed in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. More than 80 people were detained.
Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.
The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the central command of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Community Response
Community members have described the hillside area - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Rio's police stated more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, along with numerous weapons.
Raid Preparation
The coordinated mission by civil and military police was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
